The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has formally approved a marginal tariff increase for shipping lines operating in Nigeria, emphasizing that carriers should engage and inform their customers before implementing the new rates.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Apapa, the Council’s Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr. Pius Akutah, represented by the Director of Regulatory Services, Mrs. Margaret Ogbonna, confirmed the Council’s role as the Port Economic Regulator in sanctioning the adjustments, which reflect ongoing economic pressures including inflation and foreign exchange volatility.

While specific details of the tariff increases were not disclosed, Dr. Akutah noted that some charges were reviewed toward the end of the year and approved for adjustment, provided that customers are properly sensitized by their service providers.

The Council also announced plans to review fees associated with the ETO (electronic call-up) system managed by Truck Transit Park Limited in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), following stakeholder concerns about unexpected increases and possible syndicate involvement at port gates. The review is expected to be concluded by January 2026, with the Council requesting documented invoices and evidence to inform the process.

In addition, the NSC revealed ongoing engagements with the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to replace container deposits with container insurance under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, which took effect in July 2025. According to the Council, this reform aims to curb illegal practices within the maritime sector and ensure greater accountability in handling containers at ports.
