Lagos, Nigeria — October 30, 2025
The Sea Empowerment and Research Centre (SEREC) is proud to announce its official membership in Ocean Centres Ghana, a regional initiative established through a partnership between the UN Global Compact Network Ghana and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
This recognition marks a significant milestone in SEREC’s ongoing mission to promote safety, sustainability, and innovation across Africa’s maritime and blue economy sectors.
Through this membership, SEREC will actively participate in high-level dialogues and collaborative projects focused on strengthening the safety and sustainability of ocean industries. These efforts will span four key areas: Shipping & Ports, Fishing & Aquaculture, Offshore Renewables, and Finance & Investment.
As part of the Ocean Centres network, SEREC will gain access to a diverse platform of national and international stakeholders, including experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders. The membership also offers opportunities to co-create practical solutions to ocean safety challenges, contribute research insights, and shape strategies that support inclusive, resilient, and sustainable maritime development.
“This membership underscores our dedication to advancing safer and more sustainable ocean economies in Nigeria and across the region,” said Francis Aniezechukwu, Director-General of the Sea Empowerment and Research Centre. “It opens new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and regional leadership in ocean governance.”
The UN Global Compact, through the Ocean Centres platform, seeks to accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) — by bringing together diverse organizations to tackle maritime safety and sustainability issues at both local and global scales.
With this milestone, SEREC reinforces its position as a leading voice in maritime research, advocacy, and policy development across West Africa.
